Water Wins! Flint, Michigan to Get Clean Water

by Andrew Ciccone September 15, 2016

With the new Karegnondi Water Authority (KWA) pipeline in construction, water will be provided to the population of Flint, Michigan, a number in the hundreds of thousands. Why did this happen?

In 2014, in preparation for the pipeline and to save money, Flint’s water supply was switched over to pull from the Flint River. This decision led to the poisoning of hundreds of thousands of residents due to the lack of attention to detail when it came to the quality of water. Many Flint residents have been exposed to lead-infused water as a result.

The residents of Flint have endured enough. How does a community with plentiful, fresh water wind up in dire need for potable water? The residents of Flint are still experiencing a serious water crisis. We’ve got to make sure this never happens again, anywhere. Really.

The KWA pipeline, began construction in 2013, to restore clean, drinkable water back to the city of Flint and the county of Genesee in Michigan. This should have never happened. This pipeline was a knee jerk reaction enacted by the outcry from concerned citizens who recently broke through the indifference of bureaucracy to bring this miscarriage of justice to the public’s attention. The new pipe was completed July 9th, 2016.

Flint has been in violation of the federal Safe Drinking Water Act since January 2015 because of a high annual average level of one contaminant -- total trihalomethanes (TTHM) -- at a water sampling site on the city's west side.

The KWA pipeline ensures safe passage of water to Flint for treatment. About time!

This water pipeline is a reality that could have been avoided. Due to indifference, negligence and lack of accountability, that led to the recent Flint Water Crisis. This new water pipeline has cost taxpayers $285 million dollars. Gee thanks.

In addition - The new Flint Water Treatment Plant is projected to be operational in about a year, for another $12 million dollars. Ouch.

Although the city will need to meet requirements on water regulation before the populous can use the new water source. Again, why did this ever happen?

The residents of Flint have been deprived of the clean abundant water that was available before this tragedy occurred. As citizens of the world, we must make sure that the citizens of Flint Michigan and our neighbors around the world have access clean potable water without having to pay the price for the incompetence of politicians who do not act in the best interests of the public.

You Can Help . . .

The United Way of Genesee County has set up a dedicated Flint Water Fund. 100 percent of the money donated goes to buying filters and bottled water for Flint residents, as well as other emergency support services and prevention efforts.
