The Keystone XL Defeat - A Victory for Water And People

by Andrew Ciccone September 28, 2016

The now defeated Keystone XL pipeline had posed a serious risk to the environment - especially water.

What Was The Problem With Keystone XL

  1. Its potential risk to harm vast water supplies.
  2. If the Pipeline project was approved, it would have travel through the America’s heartland of agriculture, including the Missouri River, Platte River, Niobrara River, the Ogallala Aquifer, Walleye fisheries, and water loving Sage Grouse and Sandhill Cranes.

Hundreds of thousands of people have stood up against the import of dirty tar sands oil to stop the Keystone XL Pipeline to protect the health of our planet and water.

What We Can Learn?

  1. Oil And Water Don’t Mix - Essentially, planners of crude oil infrastructure do not and will not give a hoot about water - and frequently put water supplies at risk.
  2. The People Have Had Enough - Led by Native Americans, and Bill McKibben - an international coalition came together to stop Keystone XL
  3. Indigenous Peoples In Canada And The US Are Fierce Protectors Of Water - Native communities along pipeline routes fight against oil and fracked gas pipelines. Their leadership has been fierce, dedicated, and one of the strongest tools for stopping Keystone XL.

Tar sands expansion, and hence pipelines – is an issue not just about climate, but also about the rights of people to say no to development that endangers water.
