Message In A Soda Bottle - The Voyage Of The Plastiki |

They started from this Western Port aboard a plastic ship ...
So what does David de Rothschild, an environmentalist with connections to the Rothschild banking clan, do with all the extra plastic bottles in the trash bins of America? Good question. He builds the Plastiki and decides to set sail in April 2009, to raise awareness for the epidemic of plastic waste, and, on the flip side, for focusing attention on how to recycle and reuse plastic. Helping them on their awareness tour, The Plastiki will definitely be passing by the famed "Plastic Soup". Explorer, environmentalist, and British celebrity David de Rothschild will set out on a 11,000-mile (17,703-kilometer) journey across the Pacific Ocean at the end of March—in a boat made of plastic bottles.
Created from a special composite of recycled plastic, de Rothschild's boat is a 60-foot (18-meter) catamaran called Plastiki.
De Rothschild will steer the fiberglass-like frame, made buoyant by the addition of 12,000 two-liter plastic bottles along the hulls, from San Francisco to Sydney—with several island stops—on an exploration of plastic litter—the most common in the type of ocean pollution.
Due to set sail, in April 2009, from San Francisco's Pier 31, Rothschild was not, as a few would believe, inspired by Gilligan and Ginger from the SS Minnow. Inspired by legendary explorer and adventurer Thor Heyerdahl’s epic journey from South America to Polynesia on a balsa wood raft called Kontiki, Rothschild’s Plastiki will carry several scientists who will gather data on the tremendous amount of plastic waste floating in the middle of the Pacific. Reports say the waste is twice the size of Texas and continues to grow daily. They expect the journey to take over 100 days and will stop in Hawaii, Tuvalu, and Fiji before reaching Sydney’s famous harbor.

Who would have thunk that the admitted British pop star Natasha Bedingfield actually broke new ground with water music ...
But Natasha did ... Especially with her un pretentious acoustic version. The water references to life itself made her song an instant hit. Actually the most played song in the US during 2006. Now that all the hubub is over her song, you could actually hear how she used rain to empower women to live full and creative lives. Natasha Anne Bedingfield (born 26 November 1981) is a British pop singer and songwriter.
Based in Book St., London, Bedingfield debuted in the 1990s as a member of the Christian dance/electronic group The DNA Algorithm with her siblings Daniel Bedingfield and Nikola Rachelle. Throughout the 1990s and early 2000s, Bedingfield recorded rock and gospel songs for the Hillsong London Church, while Daniel went on to enjoy success with hits “Gotta Get Thru This” and “If You're Not The One”.
Bedingfield recorded her first album Unwritten in 2004. The album contained primarily uptempo pop songs and was influenced by R&B music; it enjoyed international success with over 2.5 million sold worldwide. In 2007, she received a Grammy Award nomination for "Best Female Pop Vocal Performance" for the song "Unwritten".
UPDATE - If you have the NEED to see the overproduced made for TV music video - well, who is WaterMan if I do not fulfill your needs ... Plus, you'll see the rain in this one.
Hope your happy now. Recommend this article... |

OK Water Peeps, the Big H2O Day is coming. FYI, here is where it all came from ... An international day to celebrate freshwater was recommended at the 1992 United Nations Conference on Environment and Development (UNCED). The United Nations General Assembly responded by designating 22 March 1993 as the first World Water Day.
On March 22, 2009 its about Transboundary Waters - or waters that bring us together. The world’s 263 transboundary lake and river basins include the territory of 145 countries and cover nearly half of the Earth’s land surface. Great reservoirs of freshwater also move silently below our borders in underground aquifers. With every country seeking to satisfy its water needs from limited water resources, some foresee a future filled with conflict. But history shows that cooperation, not conflict, is the most common response to transboundary water management issues. Over the last 60 years there have been more than 200 international water agreements and only 37 cases of reported violence between states over water. We need to continue to nurture the opportunities for cooperation that transboundary water management can provide. We share the responsibility for managing the world’s transboundary waters for current and future generations. Whether we live upstream, or downstream, we are all in the same boat.
There is something about water that can actually solve all of our issues on this big blue planet ... but it will take a breakthrough in human consciousness ... and the official World Water Day Website is helping the movement pick up steam. It seems someone at the UN has finally gotten the message and hired a great web team. Read on ... Recommend this article... |

This time with some dancing too - ladies, and Rudy Giuliani, check out that blue dress.
What beauty in this extraordinary piece by Johann Strauss II. Actually Johann II was quite a great composer - one of the most sought after european dance music composers of his time. Johann Strauss II (October 25, 1825 – June 3, 1899; German: Johann Baptist Strauß; also known as Johann Baptist Strauss, Johann Strauss, Jr., or Johann Strauss the Younger) was an Austrian composer famous for having written over 500 waltzes, polkas, marches, and galops. He was the son of the composer Johann Strauss I, and brother of composers Josef Strauss and Eduard Strauss. He is also the most famous member of the Strauss family. He was known in his lifetime as "The Waltz King", and was largely responsible for the popularity of the waltz in Vienna during the 19th century. He revolutionized the waltz, elevating it from a lowly peasant dance to entertainment fit for the royal Habsburg court. His works enjoyed greater fame than his predecessors, such as Johann Strauss I and Josef Lanner. Some of Strauss' most famous works include "The Blue Danube", "Wein, Weib und Gesang", "Tales from the Vienna Woods", "Tritsch-Tratsch-Polka", the "Kaiser-Walzer", and the operetta Die Fledermaus.
Me being Hungarian and all, I am quite partial to this piece. But then again there is always our friend Elmer @ Corny-Gie Hall ...

Welcome to a new feature ... Every Friday we are going to post a new water tune for you to see, watch and hear. Gotta love Youtube. Now for today's feature ... Dire Straits ... Down To The Waterline.
Want the lyrics, and the ringtone go here. More about Dire Straits ... Dire Straits was a British rock band, formed in 1977 by Mark Knopfler (lead guitar and lead vocal), his younger brother David Knopfler (guitar, backing vocal), John Illsley (bass, backing vocal), and Pick Withers (drums), and managed by Ed Bicknell. Although the band was formed in an era when punk rock was at the forefront, Dire Straits played a more conventional style, albeit with a stripped-down sound that appealed to audiences also weary of the overproduced stadium rock of the 1970s. In their early days, Mark and David requested that pub owners turn down their sound so that patrons could converse while the band played, an indication of their unassuming demeanor. Despite this oddly self-effacing approach to rock and roll, Dire Straits soon became hugely successful, with their first album going multi-platinum globally.
In the meantime, tell all your friends about our Friday H2O Music Blogging. Make it a regular stop on your Friday rounds. Recommend this article... |

On the shores of the Bosporus Strait, H2O will have its say at the 5th World Water Forum. Aptly subtitled Bridging the Divide, the 2009 World Water Forum will be where east meets west, in the beautiful heart of Istanbul, Turkey. The forum's main goal is to manifest global action on the biggest issue we all face, the issue of water . The forum deals with the problems of water of the whole world and has participants from around the world says the vice secretary-general of the event, Professor Ahmet Mete Saatçi. Sounds noble, but there its much more than just a noble cause ... its thematic, pragmatic, multi-level and goal oriented.
The planning for the forum has been based on three processes: thematic, regional and political. The thematic process aims to bring all themes, topics and sessions ultimately to one goal: for action to bridge the divide in water. There are six themes in total, which are global changes and risk management; advancing human development and Millennium Development Goals (MDGs); managing and protecting water resources and their supply systems to meet human and environmental needs; governance and management; finance; and finally education, knowledge and capacity development.
Sounds big ... Recommend this article... |
